Visitors to this year’s College of Agriculture Roundup were greeted to a sea of blue and white, laughing student and alumni and the enticing smell of burgers on the grill. These burgers weren’t just for eating, however. They were part of the UK College of Agriculture’s annual “Build a Better Burger” Contest held during UK’s Ag Roundup. The University of Kentucky Collegiate 4-H group, currently in their second year, decided to enter this year’s contest and walked away victorious!

Team members Kelli Long (Monroe County), Curtis Coombs (Henry County), Emma Huff (Grant County) and Carrie Tilghman (Barren County) won top honors, bragging rights and a prize of $100 at this year’s event. Their winning item was the “Spicy Onion Burger”. It featured a burger patty topped with cheddar cheese, grilled onions and jalapeños on a toasted onion bun. This burger was so good the judges came back asking for more!

UK Collegiate 4-H competed against veteran grilling teams that included the Ag Communicators of Tomorrow and the Agricultural Ambassadors. UK Collegiate 4-H has recently held their first meeting of the year and are already making plans for to retain their title of Burger Champions at the 2008 UK College of Agriculture Roundup.
